3NES is an art exhibit hosted by Bottleneck Gallery and curated by artist, Joseph “Chogrin” Game. A massive collection of talented artists was invited to participate in this pop-culture, gaming-inspired exhibit. Each artist was required to display three pieces – each depicting the classic, original Nintendo games – “Super Mario Bros.”, “The Legend of Zelda,” and “Metroid.”
My approach was to illustrate a series hinting at the “relationship” of the games’ baddies and heroes. This is reinforced by centering and stacking the character’s heads, unifying each piece. Each drawing appears “simple” in its circular composition, but that is contrasted by its complex line art, making the artwork more visually complex and engaging.
